Tinsel Town

This spring Hubby and I went to an estate sale.  I found many shiney brites and a box of tinsel.  The box of tinsel made me squeal.  It was in its original package and it is heavy weight. One piece has the weight of a locket's chain.  The tinsel in the stores today is so light weight and it's plastic.  Not. The. Same.
I remember having tinsel on the tree when I grew up.  My Mom reused her tinsel.  Every year she would painstakingly put it on the tree and then after Christmas she took it back off to use the next year.  Mom stored her tinsel in between the pages of our church's magazine, the Banner.
Today I started to hang the tinsel, one piece at a time, and was reminded how happy it makes me.  It's like therapy in the busy season.  It isn't rocket science and it has to be done slowly.
When we were single my sister, Kathi and I had tinsel on our trees in Iowa.  Then I got married and thankfully Hubby is a tinsel guy.  Just one of the many things that made me fall in love with him and made him Mr. Right.  Kathi, on the other hand, wasn't so lucky, her guy hates tinsel.  Not good.  They're still married but I feel bad for her as I'm hanging the tinsel.  Because the best part of tinsel is coming...
Pour yourself a glass of wine, blur your eyes just a bit, have one of your kids run past the tree to create a breeze and enjoy the season.  Come on over anytime, Kathi.  There's room on the couch and it's still amazing!

Thanksgiving 2011

We had a lovely Thanksgiving this year.  My Mom made the turkey, Hubby carved the turkey.  The turkey was so moist, oh, my, it was delicious.
Jodi and Melinda were taking a picture of  a "perfect bite of cranberry fluff".  I think every bite of fluff is perfect!
It seems like yesterday that we had three or more high chairs around the table.
Levi moved to mess up my shot.  Nice Levi.
Oh, yes, it was yummy and it was fun!  I went to boot camp this morning and paid the price.
Those hills just about killed me.  Boo.
Next up... Christmas!  I have three trees up and one to go.  We are putting up one live tree this year.
And the boys are coming home!  I just can hardly wait!

Thanksgiving Week

I am thankful for pinterest and this morning, Max is too.  Sometimes I just pin and sometimes I see something that I have to try immediately or the next morning.
All you need is a tube of cinnamon rolls or as my guys call them, faux rolls (they are faux as in Mom didn't make them from scratch) and a waffle iron.
For the first one I set them side by side.  Set your timer for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes.
Next I rolled one roll around the outside of the first roll to make one BiG waffle.
Drizzle with frosting and enjoy!
Next time I would warm the tube of  frosting in a cup of hot water so it drizzles nicely.  This morning I muddled through and learned as I cooked.  Max gave his approval.
I am thankful for pinterest.  It affirms for me that people are creative and good and sometimes brilliant!

Thanksgiving Week

I'm thankful for my job at the Lynden Pioneer Museum.  When my guys were little it was a great mom job.  Flexible hours so I didn't miss any ball games, plays, or class parties.  Now having the flexible hours is great for matching up my schedule to Hubby's schedule.   And for when I want to take a day off for no good reason.
I have met so many wonderful people at the museum.  Whether it's been friendships from the beginning (15 years ago), or the more recently made friendships, or the meeting of the visitors from all over the world, I have met some really great people.  Interesting too!  My volunteers are some pretty special people and I'm thankful for them.
I'm thankful for my boss too.  The museum director, Troy, is a talented guy.  His knowledge of local history is amazing.  And he is entertaining.  Troy speaks many languages including German tourist and el Spanish O.  How fun is that?
And lastly, one part of my job is that I get to shop.  I'm the buyer for the gift shop.  So, I'm shopping while I'm getting paid.  Read the previous sentence again.  Press the jealous button.
Yes, I am blessed in my work at the museum.  And I am thankful for my job.
*Picture was taken in the museum gift shop.

Thanksgiving Week

I borrowed these pics of Sam and Zeke at their Thanksgiving in the barracks last week from facebook.
I am thankful for the soldiers' wives that made a homemade Thanksgiving dinner for the single soldiers last week.  It's amazing what a homemade meal can do for morale.  Especially when guys aren't coming home for Thanksgiving or Christmas.  Please say a prayer for Sam and the guys today.  There is a lot of uncertainty for them right now, regarding the holidays and their upcoming deployment.  Please pray for their families too.  It's hard for mamas and wives with the holidays coming up and the deployment dates changing daily.  All this talk about action and hot spots is hard to hear in the media, but it's also hard to hear, that they can't say either.
I am so thankful for these guys and all that they do while serving their country
Give thanks to the Lord for He is good.
His love endures forever.

Be My Guest

This summer I started to take Danny's bedroom apart, after all, he is 24.  He visits but doesn't stay.  I remembered to take some pictures after I began emptying the bookcases.  His room had become a place to put things that I didn't know where to keep.  Or if I should keep.

T'was a mess.
When I decided to make Danny's room the guest room, my goal was to use what I had in the house.  To use soft, neutral colors and make the room cozy.  I painted the walls and the trim and then started walking around the house looking for furniture, accessories and bedding.  I like the challenge of a low or no budget.  Reduce, Reuse and Rycycle, my favorite way to be green.
The dresser was a changing table when the boys were babies, then it was black and in the master bedroom.  Now it's white and looks fresh.  The lamp is one I bought at an estate sale when I was single and furnishing my first apartment.  The burlap shade was from a Target end cap.  The cream afghans were made by my Grandma Vander Haak and my Aunt Tywla.
I wanted a lot of texture and layers in the room.
Hubby and I found the bark cloth vintage curtains at the Anacortes Shipwreak Days for $3, there are shades underneath the valances.  The little wicker suitcase belonged to Millie Bear, a dear friend, who has since passed on.  My sis, Kathi bought it at a fund raising auction and then gave it to me.  MB is stenciled on the case.  I love it.  There is a green suitcase under the dresser too.
The stitchery I found at a garage sale.  The arch on the end reminds me of the Stone House.
The letters spelling 'Be My Guest' were so much fun for me to make.  I painted, used mod podge, paper, fabric, buttons, vintage maps and lace.  I sanded the edges.  And aside from the letters I used things I had around the house, in my scrapping supplies.

I had the Eiffel Tower lamp and the shade is covered with squares and hearts cut from a French dictionary.  I added a few pale green crystals.  The nightstand was gold and came from the sitting room.  It just needed a fresh coat of paint.

The quilt is from a garage sale via Pottery Barn.  The comforter, I had and the crocheted lace trimmed pillowcases are from my aunt.  I think my Grandma Dykstra made them.  I bought new pillows and sheets.
I'd like to replace the bookshelf but I am running out of time before Christmas so I added a poster and some other items to hide it a bit.  I plan to add soft towels, bottled water, snacks and some Christmas decorations.  The Christmas decorations I plan to use involve fresh greens and some soft pink, blue and gold shiney brites.
The little magazine rack also came from Shipwreck Days this summer, a fun day for Hubby and me.  The chair was in my carport, unbeknowst to me.  Remember that ugly story?  The slipcover came from Pier One off the clearance for $9.98. The chair rocks, literally.
I have a great antique headboard but it has to wait until after Christmas.  It needs some major work.  I still need a soft rug and a luggage rack.
Danny called yesterday, he and Jessica will be here on December 19.  So, the room is ready for Jessica, its first guest.  I can hardly wait!

More Random

Whew, I guess I don't even have to go to Parent Teacher Conferences.  Max just informed me that every teacher will say the same thing...
"Max is a delight to have in class."
Wow!  Isn't that special?  I think we'll go just hear all this wonderfulness about our son.
Check out his Senior pictures HERE.

Max has gone to school fashionably with a vintage style this week.  He raided the closet and found a blast from the past.
Hubby made stir fry for dinner last night.  It was so delicious and then he did the dishes.
Yep, I'm a lucky girl.
The snow forecast is looking good.  This makes me so happy.  I am packing the parka and mittens.  And doing the SnOw dance.
I'll keep you posted...

Catching Up

*Max had his senior pictures taken by the Snapsister that is my sister.  Of course, Hawley had to get in some of the shots.  The pictures of Max turned out great.  One more senior to do checked off the list.
*On Wednesday evening we have our last Parent Teacher Conference to go to at school.  And this is terrible but  honestly, I don't want to go.  I mean really, what are they going to tell me about Max that I don't already know?  What kind of solutions are they going to give me?  He is who he is and I don't mean this in a negative way.  I know my kiddo.  He has senoritis.  It's too early for a case of senoritis but he has been diagnosed, and it's a pretty serious case.  Possibly incurable even.
*We are going with Max, his friend, Tyler  and his parents on a little getaway.  Looking for snow in one of my favorite places.  There will be no snowboarding as it's not open early this year, so hopefully no hospital time either.  There will be lots of relaxing though and the drive should be gorgeous, the leaves are so pretty this year.
*I am still working on the guest room.  I get distracted by work, laundry, baking etc. but I have another project  finished and ready to put on the wall.  I'll share photos soon.
*I'm losing confidence as I age, I don't like it.  Lots of second guessing.  Anyone else?
*No closer on choosing living room window treatments.  It's difficult and takes confidence.
*Macy's One Day Sale... today and tomorrow, so it's two days but it's a one day sale and some things have to be purchased in the morning.  So confusing!  I just want a new Rowenta iron and can't figure out when to purchase it for maximum savings.  A Macy's employee was consulted and she is just as confused as the rest of us.  Any ideas?  I need to iron the sheets. {wink, wink}
*Falling back and gaining an hour is just the best.  I do love it!
*I'm not going to lie, I have a hard time on the anniversary of Aaron Aamot's death. I can't imagine the grieving his family goes through each anniversary.  Remember them in your prayers, please.

*This post has been a bit random but I guess that is life... make the most of it!

Retail Christmas is Coming

Jerrie and I went crazy at the museum today.  We put together the Christmas displays for the gift shop.  I started yesterday and then we went full tilt all day.  I have some finishing up to do, details to take of and we need to make some signage, other than that we are close to being ready for Christmas.  Our gift shop open house is November 17,  in the evening.  Save the date!
We will have sales galore, Starbucks and treats and  a drawing or two.

What parent hasn't made this threat?

I really want the playmobil  post office Advent calendar... please Santa.
I had a lot of fun with Jerrie today.  We worked really hard.  The best part of the day?  We had our first red cup of the season.  Yep, it was a good day.  Thank you so much Jerrie!
